A screw of a less diameter than the bolt and with a thread of the same pitch, but of an opposite hand to that of the bolt is arranged to bear against it. This screw may be pivoted to the nut by a stem or to an additional lock nut; or, as in Fig 8, it may lie in a groove in the nut.

DESCRIPTION:

On this original linen-backed lithograph from 1898, Joshua Pusey, a citizen of the United States of America, patented improvements in wrenches. The improved wrench is composed of a combination of the following essential parts; a forward and rear jaw, a guide-stem connecting them upon which one of the jaws is adapted to slide and a handle between bifurcations of which the jaws are placed, and to which the front or outer jaw is pivoted; together with lugs or projections of the handle which are adapted to bear and slide against rear surfaces of the rear or inner jaw.

DESCRIPTION:

On this original linen-backed lithograph from 1932, Bell Telephone Laboratories Incorporated patented a tool for joining wires by rolling. The historic laboratory originated as the Western Electric Engineering department in the late 19th century, located at 463 West Street, New York City. In 1925, after years of conducting research and development under Western Electric, American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T Corporation), Western Electric divided ownership of the newly formed Bell Telephone Laboratories. Researchers working at Bell Labs are credited with the development of radio astronomy, the transistor, the laser, the charge-coupled device (CCD), information theory, the Unix operating system, and the programming languages C, C++, and S. Nine Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work completed at Bell Laboratories.
