DESCRIPTION:

On this original linen-backed lithograph from 1888, R. C. Christie, M.  Gledhill and H. H. S. Carington patented a turret gun mounting that facilitates the working of guns mounted on minimum embrasure carriages. The gun, with its carriage and slides, is vertically adjusted about a virtual pivot in or near the center of the embrasure. Two guns may be mounted side by side, and the elevating gear connected so that the weights balance each other, on gun rising while the other falls. Hydraulic elevating-cylinders may also be provided beneath the slides.

DESCRIPTION:

On this original linen-backed lithograph from 1919 (includes original specification sheet), Caterpillar Tractors Limited and Holt Manufacturing Company patented an improved gun carriage or mounting for heavy artillery. The invention consists essentially in providing the gun carriage with self-propelled truck mechanisms with chain-tracks, detachably arranged at each end of the main frame of the carriage in such a way as to be removable and replaceable by wheel-fitted trucks, which latter are adapted to be hauled along a railway by a locomotive or other tractor, the chain-tracks of the truck mechanisms at other times affording the sole means of progression.
